Welcome to Hardten's Garden!

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Hello, all! Welcome to Hardten's Garden!

I am ecstatic to begin creating this space to share my favorite gardening tips and fresh recipes highlighting the bold flavors of homegrown produce.

Growing up, I always admired my mom and her passion for gardening. Year after year, I was in awe of her perfect flower gardens and love for learning about all types of plants. I have vivid memories of harvesting fresh green beans, snap peas, and tomatoes from the little vegetable garden my sister and I helped her grow every year (until the deer destroyed it all!). Undoubtedly, I have her to thank for passing down her green thumb.

Over the last few years, I've become increasingly passionate about gardening. Like many during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I picked up a new hobby - but to my surprise, it stuck! It all started with a hand-me-down raised planter and a darling little starter pack of dinosaur kale. I'd always loved caring for houseplants but craved the challenge and excitement of growing my own food. Although I ran into quite a few hiccups during that first try growing my own super greens, I was hooked. My tiny kale crop quickly expanded to include as many in-season veggies as I could fit in my patio space.

But the desire to grow my own produce stems from more than just wanting a fun challenge. Knowing where my food comes from and exactly what has gone into it before it arrives on my plate has been a crucial driver of this passion and eye-opening, to say the least. Knowing I'm in control of what goes into my food is empowering. Although I'm nowhere near growing enough to support myself completely, I'm able to make more educated choices on where I purchase the rest of my produce.

My hope for this page is to share gardening tips I've learned through my own trial and error to help beginner gardeners start growing rewarding, nutritious, flavorful produce. Combining my love for cooking, I'll be sharing lots of yummy recipes highlighting seasonal homegrown produce. I also hope to learn from you all, as I'm always trying to learn new gardening methods, recipes, and tips & tricks for a successful growing season - so please share your ideas, too!

Cheers to learning together, and happy gardening!

Addie
